Hour Twelve: Hit the Road

Summer is roadtrip season, and just like for readathon, audiobooks are the perfect companion. In fact several readathon-ers are participating in this weekend’s ‘thon almost entirely in the car. I love a good roadtrip and whether you’re doing it solo or with one person or a whole carload, the opportunities for some good bookish shenanigans are multitude. Which books will you listen to? Which bookstores or literary sights will you see? How many fights over which Hogwarts house is better will you have?

So for our next challenge, in the comments, tell me either: 1) which three audiobooks you’d recommend for a roadtrip and why, OR 2) if you could take a roadtrip to any three bookish locations, what would they be? And because, books are magic, your destinations don’t obviously have to make sense within the confines of space and time.     Three audiobooks that would be great on a road trip:
    1. Behold the Dreamers – Great narrator and an excellent, thought-provoking story.
    2. Dark Matter – I did actually listen to this on a road trip. It was super engaging and made the miles fly by.
    3. Hunger – So, so good and beautifully read by the author, Roxane Gay.

  6. Many of my book road trips would be from my childhood. I would love walk through the wardrobe to Narnia, cruise the planets with Ford from Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy and listen to Sherlock solve crimes in his pad on Baker Street.

    1. Hogwarts OF COURSE!
    2. Red London from the Shades of Magic series, or any of the London’s I can get my hands on
    3. From the book The Library at Mount Char, I’d like to explore that library cause DAMN the way they describe it in the book is marvellous!

  11. Amazing question! If I could pick any locations I would take a trip to:

    1. Milderhurst Castle in Kent, England from “The Distant Hours” by Kate Morton. I love old and historical building, it’s my dream to one day travel to England and I was absolutely enamoured by the Milderhurts Castle as described in Kate Morton’s novel.

    2. Night Court from Sarah J. Maas’s “A Court of Mist and Fury”. I’ve always been fascinated by the night sky and stars, so the descriptions of the court where nights are absolutely breathtaking, stole my heart and I would love to visit it.

    3. And last but not least I would like to go to the legendary island of Avalon and to Camelot. I guess here any retelling of Arthurian legends will work but if I had to choose one, I’d go with my favourite – “The Road to Avalon” by Joan Wolf. I know that these places are connected to the real existing areas, but it would be that much more amazing to visit them with the characters from the legends and during the time period from the book! 🙂

    I don’t think my answers published. I got interrupted. 🙂 I love audiobooks! Right now I’m listening to the Raven Boys series. Will Patton is a great performer and perfectly matched for this series.

    1–Harry Potter because the voices are awesome.
    2–Magnus Chase because Rick Riordan is genuinely funny and it really comes across when read aloud.
    3–Daughter of Smoke and Bone–I’m not even sure that this series is all that great, but Khristine Hvam is terrific!! She makes the characters come to life as well as tones down some of the melodrama.

    Love the Harry Potter books for road trips. Obviously my first trip choice would be the train to Hogwarts. Second would be the library in Dowser series. Third would be the island with the Black Stallion

    Okay, so definitely a road-trip to Hogwarts (cliche I know, but who cares, I truly want go on the Hogwarts Express), then to Pemberly, for a rendezvous with Mr Darcy, and finally (this is technically not a road-trip, but the equivalent of one in the future, where this is set in) – on board the Rampion spaceship headed to Luna (after the psycho queen is dead that is).

    Nos4A2 by Joe Hill (read by Kate Mulgrew)
    Ready Player One by Ernest Cline (read by Wil Wheaton)
    Trigger Warning by Neil Gaiman (or basically anything read by Neil Gaiman).

    I fully support this list. Anything read by Neil Gaiman. (Including the Cheesecake Factory menu LOL)

    Perfect audiobooks for road trip is “The Martian” (which is really laughing out loud), “Passenger” (and Wayfarer) and “Eat, Pray, Love.”

    And I would travel to Weep from “Strange the Dreamer” in its pride days, and of course Hogwarts on a roadtrip.

    I’m much more of a music on roadtrips type, so I’ll take the #2 challenge.

    1. Ceres, from The Expanse, but maybe just for a few days and definitely with a proper Belter guide.
    2. Oldtown, from A Song of Ice and Fire, because it seems like an interesting cultural hub. And relatively safe, considering the world, mild weather, a bit cosmopolitan, lovely old history.
    3. Bag End, from The Hobbit, because I’m truly just a rather tall Hobbit and I would like to go home, thank you. 😉

    2. It would be great to travel to London and be beside Sherlock while he solves his mysteries, though it would involve murder…
    3. Also just finding a magic wardrobe that would take me to Narnia would be awesome 🙂

  28. 1. DEVIL IN THE WHITE CITY – it’s NF but has the paving of a thriller!
    2. JONATHAN STRANGE AND MR NORRELL – highly entertaining and long enough to get you through a lengthy road trip 🙂
    3. Michael Connelly’s THE LATE SHOW – great suspense and an intro to a new series

    I should add that I’m pretty new to audio books, these just happen to be three of my faves so far!

    I would love to first go to the place I’m currently reading about: pride week in San Fransisco! Then I want to visit the garden from Secret Garden. And lastly I want to visit the Restaurant at the End of the World!

    road trip locations:
    1. Hogwarts! and Hogsmeade, because absolute, literal magic.
    2. Travel to and around the lake district in the U.K., akin to Elizabeth Bennet and family, and check out al those gorgeous manner houses.
    3. Not technically a road trip, but I would love to explore the library in ‘The Invisible Library’ series. It’s so large, I feel like you could road trip inside the library!!!
    runner up: I’d also love to follow Shawdow and Wednesday’s road trip from ‘American Gods’.

    Audiobook reccs:
    1. Cinder by Marissa Meyer (really anything that Rebecca Soler narrates will be an awesome ride)

    2. Harry Potter (Duh and Jim Dale is also fantastic)

    3. Aristotle and Dante Discover the Secret of the Universe by Benjamin Alire Saenz (LIN MANUEL MIRANDA!)

    The bookish worlds I would love to go to is Velaris (ACOMAF) and Narnia. I LOOOVED the first film as a kid (didn’t get into reading until I got older) and I always wanted to go there.

    Audio books:
    I’d have to say celebrity memoirs they are just fun and quick listens. Plus it’s an added thrill to hear the author. Andy Cohen’s are hilarious! Also THRONES OF GLASS was amazing (the full series) on audible. And Harry Potter was just as magical

    Three literary places: HOGWARTS, Ireland from Maeve Bincheys perspective and the Night Court in the court of series
