Hour 42: Literary Dinner Party

One of the very best parts of readathon is the food (trust me on this). I am all about planning my snacks and meals in advance, and the name of the game is, ALL THE CARBS. I try to eat healthy, I promise, but then again,  mac & cheese exists in the world. It’s only a problem if you say it’s a problem, right?

I say, combat the sneaking suspicion that food and books are not as closely related as you might think by dreaming up your perfect dinner party. Who would you most like to attend a bookish dinner party with? Authors (living or dead), fictional characters, anything goes. That’s your next challenge: which five bookish people (or animals, I’m not picky) would be around your perfect literary dinner table?

Post a comment with your dinner party guest list; you have until Hour 48 at midnight ET tonight to enter.

And now for the winners of the Hour 36 Swagilicious challenge:

    My literary dinner party:

    1. Agatha Christie (let’s solve the mystery of the greatest mystery writer by discovering where she was for those missing days…)
    2. Sherlock Holes (to assist in deducing Agatha’s mystery)
    3. Biff (from Lamb by Christopher Moore for comic relief)
    4. Charles Dickens (just ‘cuz it Charles Dickens…’nuff said)
    5. Timothy Zahn (to get his version of the continuation of the Star Wars story)

  2. 1. Hannibal Lecter
    2. Cheshire cat
    3. Drogon ( dragon from Game of Thrones)
    4. General Zaroff ( Most Dangerous Game)
    5. James Moriarty ( Sherlock Holmes)

I’m not a big conversationalist but I think I would enjoy their conversation while playing with the animals.

  5. From literary celebrities, I would say – Harry Potter, Jules Verne, Jack London, Neal Shusterman, Stephen King, Mark Twain, J.K. Rowling, George Orwell, C.S. Lewis, and Kurt Vonnegut.
From personal friends I would say – Francisco Javier Campos, Kim Tracy Miller, Kim Kimberly Miller, Natalie Dorfeld, Mocte Zuma to start with but Harry Potter had a HUGE table, right? Sooooo I would also say….Adi Alsaid, Jack Little, Danielle Levredge, Daniel Daniel Hammer Hamilton, Debbie Ramon, Sam Kim, Kristen Ritter, Kristen Dixie, Camila de la Parra, Vio Letra, and that would just be a start!

  6. 1. Rose Hathaway (Vampire Academy). She is just so awesome. I’d love to chat with her.

    2. Mia Thermopolis (Princess Diaries). I mean. Why not?

    3. Zoey Redbird (House Of Night). I mean who wouldn’t want to see those amazing tattoos she has?

    4. Stark (House Of Night). He’s as bad ass as Hathaway. I’d love to see a conversation between these two.

    5. Dimitri (Vampire Academy). Can’t have Rose without Dimitri right????

  7. I’d totally invite…
    1. “Highway” Sanchez Sanchez (from Valeria Luiselli’s THE STORY OF MY TEETH) – to see what/whom he’d try to auction off

    2. David Sedaris, on the condition that he’d let me read his journal entry afterward

    3. The squirrel (from Elizabeth McKenzie’s THE PORTABLE VEBLEN) – so that we could have a nice chat about economics, foreign affairs, and other squirrely topics

    4. Mr. Nakano (from Hiromi Kawakami’s THE NAKANO THRIFT SHOP) – He’d never be afraid to share his strong opinions, so the conversation would never lag

    5. Samantha Irby – She’s hilarious, loves food, and would make it a par-TAY!

    Owen Meany

    Ned Stark

  11. Silly me 😂 it says five bookish characters and I commented only one.

My complete answer would be Gillian Flynn, Hermione Granger, Sherlock Holmes, Hercule Poirot and Step (aka Hugo Libera😍).

    Let’s have dinner.

First easy picks would be Merry and Pipping, both so amiable, enjoy a good meal, and full of stories to tell at the table. Jo March would pour the tea and exchange kids’ hijinks with Molly Weasley while she knitted. Sara Crewe would listen with big eyes and then top any tale.

    3. Anatole Ngemba (from The Poisonwood Bible),

  16. First I would pick the Cheshire cat, because he is my spirit animal. Then I’d ask Lyra from THE GOLDEN COMPASS and Hermione Granger to have a seat at the table so Lyra could delightfully annoy the crap out of Hermione. Because of course. Next, then Roxane Gay to chat about being a bad feminist while drinking tea from pot with pink flowers on it. Last, but not least, Neil Gaiman, because of all the people out there, I suspect he would feel totally at home next to the Cheshire cat and a group of women talking about feminism, giant polar bears, and SPEW.

After spending months reading about them in the #hpchapteraday challenge, I think I’d want my literary dinner to be in the Burrow at the Weasley house. Then I’d could dine surrounded by Molly and her good cooking, Fred, George, Mr Weasley, and Ron. Ginny could come too if we were allowed an extra person. And let’s face it, it’s the Weasley house, there’s ALWAYS and extra person. 😉

I’d like to have dinner with JKR, Snape (she should tell him why he suffered all his life), Vlarad from the Ghostsitter kid’s book series, Professor Weissinger from the Mara and the Fire Bringer series and …well, there are Star Trek novels, so I’d like to have Spock there, too. And marry him? It’ll be our wedding reception dinner 😉
