Hour Twelve: Hit the Road

Summer is roadtrip season, and just like for readathon, audiobooks are the perfect companion. In fact several readathon-ers are participating in this weekend’s ‘thon almost entirely in the car. I love a good roadtrip and whether you’re doing it solo or with one person or a whole carload, the opportunities for some good bookish shenanigans are multitude. Which books will you listen to? Which bookstores or literary sights will you see? How many fights over which Hogwarts house is better will you have?

So for our next challenge, in the comments, tell me either: 1) which three audiobooks you’d recommend for a roadtrip and why, OR 2) if you could take a roadtrip to any three bookish locations, what would they be? And because, books are magic, your destinations don’t obviously have to make sense within the confines of space and time. Want to roadtrip with Jamie to Lallybroch (from Outlander), the city of Sky (from The Inheritance Trilogy), and Miss Qiunzella Thiskwin Penniquiqul Thistle Crumpet’s Camp for Hardcore Lady Types (from Lumberjanes)? Go for it.

We’ll be announcing winners for this challenge at Hour 18 in six hours. And now for the winners of the Hour Six Shelfie challenge:

I’d recommend for a road trip
    1. Mr Mercedes by Stephen King, narrated by Will Patton- because it’s one of Kings finest cat and mouse tales, and Will Patton could read the phone book and make it interesting!
    2. American Gods by Neil Gaiman, narrated by George Guidall- because this is basically one long road trip in a novel. With angels.
    3. The Exorcist by William Peter Blatty, narrated by the author- this is for a long night trip, where having the s**t scared out of you at 80kms an hour is fun. And it will definitely keep you awake & alert!

I adore audiobooks so three I’d say to choose would be

    1. Outlander: Davina Porter could read the phone book and make it impossible to stop listening. Plus it’s super long and an amazing story.

    2. Blood Song by Anthony Ryan: I just finished it and it was amazing. The narrator, the story, I couldn’t stop.

3.The Chronicles of Narnia: Wonderful books, great for a family trip!

  8. I have recently discovered that I love listening to memoirs read by the author on audio. Some recent listens that were excellent:

    1. The Princess Diarist by Carrie Fisher
    2. Born with Teeth by Kate Mulgrew
    3. Born a Crime by Trevor Noah

Also, anything by Neil Gaiman that he narrates. He’s fabulous. Norse Mythology was great on audio.

Anything narrated by Jonathan Marosz or Steven Weber! I love both of them as readers. Is that crazy that I have favorite audiobook narrators? Both have read Harlan Coben books which I love! I actually prefer them to the author himself reading….

Bookish places … 1) I really enjoy reading during the fall when the air is crisp and the patio doors are open and I have a candle burning … so in the fall I would like to visit Salem MA and read a good spooky book at a BnB … 2) I’ve never visited the big library in NYC and I would like to do that … 3) I want to go to Key West and visit the Hemingway House and visit the Hemingway cats. (If we go fictional, I don’t want to visit, but I want to ENROLL at Hogwarts) 😉🤓⚡️

    1) Kelly is pointing to one of them. The Harry Potter universe.
    2) The universe of #phantomtollbooth especially taking my time in #dictionopolis
    3) All the places mentioned in @alittlelifebook in NYC.

2.) The night circus: Jim Dale is a classic narrator and the night circus is just amazing.
3.) Simon vs the Homo Sapiens Agenda: Nothing but pure happiness, endearing characters, and huge smiles. Plus Oreos make good road trip snacks.

    Hello everyone and happy reading!
I would like to travel to:
    1) HOGWARTS!! Most definitely. Although, I don’t believe you can drive right in. So let’s say we’re taking the Weasley’s flying car!
    2) Rivendell from Lord of the Rings!
    3) And Red London from A Darker Shade of Magic!

  15. 1. I recently got to experience Harry Potter and the Sorceror’s Stone read by Jim Dale. I can’t believe I let myself take this long to give it a listen! I would definitely get my hands on the rest of them for a road trip.
    2. I also listened to a fantastic full cast performance of The Hobbit done by the BBC back in the 30s. It was one of the most entertaining things I’ve listened to in a while!
    3. The Bear and the Nightingale by Katherine Arden would be good for listening while driving at night. The book is based around a lot of magical realism, which makes it extra spooky.

  17. Bookish trips would include a trip to that library on the Canada / U.S. border, a super long flight with A+ comfortable seats so I could just read uninterrupted for hours, and I guess just a walk to the other side of my town to see the house Vonnegut lived in when he started Slaughterhouse-Five.

My next road trip is going to have 3 stellar audiobooks keeping me company that I highly recommend everyone listen to: A Court of Thorns and Roses, A Court of Mist and Fury, & A Court of Wings and Ruin! I can’t get over how amazing that trilogy was, and listening to it only makes me love it more.

If I could road trip to any fictional place, though, I think it’d have to be Le Cirque des Rêves. That would be a dream made real. I’d also love to be able to pass through the Night Bazaar from A Star-Touched Queen on my way to Velaris, the City of Starlight, from ACOMAF.

      1. Because I’ve heard this audiobook before and the narrator has a very soothing voice and it’s a great creepy story.
      2. It’s a story of revenge and who doesn’t love that, with a great twist and again the narrator is very good.
      3. I’ve watched the show and haven’t read the book. Idk I figured it’d be a great choice on a road trip.

As for bookish locations I would like to take a road trip to:
    1. Prythian: All the courts sound like they would be amazing and I would love to spend time in each!
    2. Totsuki Culinary Academy: Food Wars is one of my favorite manga series. Every time I read it I get hungry and want to try the food everyone is cooking.
    3. New York: I feel like I’ve read a lot of books that either take place in New York or the characters visit the state. I would love to go on a bookish tour of New York.

  21. One of the best executed audiobooks I’d recommend is The Blade Itself by Joe Abercrombie read by S. Pacey. The book itself (see what I did there?) is so much fun and the narrator does a wonderful job in bringing up the characters’ personalities. A second audiobook I’d recommend is The Luminaries by Eleanor Catton and a final recommendation is The Goldfinch by Donna Tartt. All three are exellent executions of big books that you can enjoy on a long road trip on the way there and back!

Even though I often imagine what the worlds from the many fantasy novels I read would be like, I would actually choose existing places to visit. There are many historical and classical locations I have never been to so here we go!
    – Ireland: visit the locations of many a famous classical writer like James Joyce.
    – London, England: also home to many famous writers but I want to see 221B Baker Street.
    – Scotland: I guess this is the fantasy one because I want to see the Scotland of Outlander.
    – I have to throw in this last one because it is a must see! Have to go to Hogwarts, who doesn’t want to go there! (Universal Studios version will suffice!)

    Happy reading everyone!

Three audiobooks that I will recommend on a road trip will be:

    1) Stardust by Neil Gaiman- because it’s magical, truly truly magical. It’s about the epic journey that Tristran takes for the love of his life- through across the wall to the magical world, making foes of old and powerful witches, going on adventures on the magical ship, I can go on about this book but I will just conclude by saying this book can transport the reader/listener to a magical realm and that’s why it’s a must on road trips.

    2) Alchemist by Paulo Coelho- I know many people do not like this book but this book is all about a simple shepherd boy discovering the meaning of life through a courageous treasure hunt he undertakes all by himself. All in all, it is about a very inspiring journey through the sands of time and of life which makes it an another important addition on a road trip. Let’s accept it or not, all the road trips we go on, we lose a part of ourselves and rediscover a part & create beautiful memories to last a lifetime.

    3) Another book which I will recommend will be Wild by Cheryl Strayed. I know it’s non-fiction but it’s a journey of self-discovery, an impulsive decision taken by a woman who has lost it all. She was broken beyond reprieve, she was depressed and shattered. She had no experience or training, yet she hit the road and the hiked, a journey that had its fair share of terrors and triumphs, a journey that ended up healing her, and made her stronger. I know there is a movie on this but hearing it in first person, is like a power surge through the listener’s veins. Road trip or not, I recommend this to all.

    Thank you so much!
I hope you’re all having a great readathon so far. ❤

  29. Roadtrip! For 3 audiobooks I’d go with 1) Eleanor Oliphant Is Completely Fine by Gail Honeyman because it made me laugh out loud; 2) Spoonbenders by Daryl Gregory because how can you not like a dysfunctional family of psychics; 3) The First Fifteen Lives of Harry August by Claire North because it’s incredibly distracting to imagine your life lived over and over and over again on a long roadtrip.

If I’d make a roadtrip to a bookish location or more than one, it would be to Stuttgart, where the novels of Elisabeth Katabek take place (and my best friend lives there, and still I’ve never been there). And maybe I’d make a detour to Munich. I’ve been there on the set of the movie adaptation of ‘Mara and the Fire Bringer’, but I never went to see the actual book locations, except for the school in which the protagonist is bullied in the beginning.

(I’d like to see Cornwall as well, where some good books take place, but as I’d NEVER take the tunnel to England, I’d have to take the plane and therefore it would not be a road trip anymore.)

    1. To attempt the path taken by Shadow in American Gods (Long shot, I know! Gaiman even says in the preface that the odds are low).

    2. Dostoyevsky’s St. Petersburg. I lived in Moscow and have been to Petersburg many times, but I would love to tour the areas in Dostoyevsky’s books.

    3. The area where Stephen King grew up, which inspired in part the town of Derry, Maine. I live in Massachusetts now, so maybe this can be a reality!
