Hour 48: The End! + Wrap-Up, Prizes, and More!!

You guys are absolute heroes! We made it to the end, and as always, I’m humbled and proud and freakin’ exhausted. And despite the late night, we’ve got some important business AKA PRIZES to take care of first.

We had 1165 readers join in from all over the world. Considering that back in January when we did this last, there were just about 460 readers, I’m so stoked about the response this time around.

It has to be said that this explosion is due in no small part to the amazing crew at Litsy, especially Kendra and Liberty for hosting giveaways, challenges and Twitter takeovers all weekend. Litsy was on fire all weekend (in fact, you guys crashed the app a couple times because of the traffic). So many of you won amazing prizes, thanks to our sponsors, Algonquin, Graywolf Press, Coffeehouse Press, and HMH. But the prize winning isn’t over!

As soon as they’ve crunched the numbers, Litsy will be announcing five grand prizes over on the app, brought to you by Novel Tees and Out of Print. They’ll be giving out awards for:

  • “Jay Gatsby Popularity” Award (Most Followers Gained)
  • “MLR: Most Litfluential Reader” Award (Most Litfluence Gained)
  • “Charles Bingley Congeniality” Award (Ms./Mr. Congeniality award)
  • “Most Enthusiastic Readathoner” Award (Most Comments Made)
  • “Eager Reader” Award (Greatest TBR Stack Growth)

Thank you to NovelTeas – who create delicious tea flavors based on classic novels – for sponsoring these awards. Also, look how gorgeous the tins are!

novelteas large

Stay tuned for those winners to be announced here and on Litsy, early this week.

Also, thanks to Out of Print, everyone – EVERYONE – who finished a full 24 hours of reading is getting a pair of awesome bookish socks. In order to get your pair, leave a comment with a photo or a link to a photo (on social media or a blog etc.) showing proof of your full 24 hours read. If you don’t have social media on which to post a picture or are unable to comment with a picture, leave a comment letting me know and then email me at 24in48readathonofficial@gmail.com with your photo.**You must get your entries to me NO LATER than 12pm ET, tomorrow (Monday, July 25)** (Be cool, people. No cheating.)

Next, the winner of the $10 giftcard from our Intro Survey – or should I say winners! I know I said there would be just one, but we had so many entries from all over the bookternet that I couldn’t help but give out more than one. So I’m giving away THREE $10 giftcards to Amazon, B&N, Book Depository, or your book retailer of choice (or Starbucks. Because caffeine.). The winners of those prizes are:

Nephele (@NepheleTempest)

Kirsten (@snakes6atx)

Lisa (@flyfarther79)

Congrats to all of you, and I’ll be emailing you soon.

Finally, to make sure I continue to run this readathon in a way that works well for everyone, especially as it gets bigger and bigger, I’d love it if you could fill out the closing survey in the comments:

  1. How many books did you read? Pages? (If you didn’t keep track, tell me that too!)
  2. How many hours did you read?
  3. What do you think worked well in this readathon?
  4. What do you think could be done to improve the readathon for next time?
  5. Will you participate in a future 24in48 readathon?

Okay! I think that’s all the wrapping up I need to do…Oh wait, you thought I forgot! Obviously I need to announce the dates for the next readathon, don’t I?? The next 24in48 will be held on:

January 21-22, 2017

Can’t wait to see you all then! Now I’m going to go do this:

  1. Survey!

    1. I read seven books almost eight.
    2. I read 24 hours. It was tough since as a librarian, I worked on Saturday but managed to squeeze it in making my last hour at 11:49 pm last night.
    3. I loved this except when the app crashed. Shows the power of readers!😃
    4. More prizes but everything was GREAT!
    5. YES! I had so much fun and loved it! Thank you!

I’m on Litsy as Graciouswarriorprincess which is where I posted everything for the 24in48!

Link to my Litsy post with my final time read.

    Survey:
    1. Completed 6 full books, plus 50 pages of another. Totaled 1931 pages

    2. Read for 24 hours and almost 54 minutes

    3. Thought everything about readathon worked pretty well- the prize entries on Litsy were nice way to break up reading time with something different.

    4. Nothing comes to mind

    5. Yes, definitely!

    1. I read 5 books total. I read 3 books start to finish (2 comic trades), finished 1 already started book, and finished 1 already started audio book. I read 794 pages and listened to 5 hours & 36 minutes of audio.

    2. I read for a total of 16 hours and 27 minutes (5 hours & 36 minutes of audio). This was a lot more than I thought I’d do, since I have two little kiddos and my husband is out of town. (The kids played really well as I read!)

    3. I loved the community on Litsy. They are very supportive, great conversationalists, and a lot of fun. I also love that even though I knew I couldn’t do the full 24 hours, everyone was welcoming and encouraging anyway. While I didn’t do all the challenges, it was fun to see the creative things people did. I especially enjoyed the spine poetry. Also, #hashtags on Litsy! Hooray! That made it so much easier to see what people were up to.

    4. I live in the Northwest and felt like I was trying to keep up with things going on over on the East Coast. I’m not sure that needs to be fixed, but it’s something I’m thinking about. I participated on Litsy and didn’t realize frequent posts were going up on the blog (with all the great .gifs!). Plus Twitter and Instragram! Not that you need more things to post, but maybe cross post or link more on Litsy to the other platforms? (Unless that defeats the purpose of getting more people involved and on Litsy). I was bummed about Litsy’s technical difficulties and I stopped using it for a while due to the loading issues. However, I am glad to hear it was because so many people were using the app! I do like the idea of a group read.

5 Absolutely! Thank you for all your hard work to make this happen. It is appreciated and I can’t wait until January.

    1. How many books did you read? Pages?

I read 8 books, plus part of 2 audiobooks. It ended up being 1881 pages (plus 3.5 hours of audiobook time).

    2. How many hours did you read?

    I read 24 hours.

    3. What do you think worked well in this readathon?

I loved the freedom to read whatever we wanted and the flexibility to try for whatever amount of time we could handle. I LOVED that there were so many people participating! It really made it feel like a fun community event.

    4. What do you think could be done to improve the readathon for next time?

I probably could have done this unofficially myself, but I would have loved the option to start reading on Friday night instead of waiting for midnight. A readathon I used to participate in would run from 7am Friday – 7am Monday and participants could choose any 48-hour period within that time. BUT I understand that that’s harder to manage.

I personally would have liked to be able to count some of the updating / social media time as “readathon hours”, but again, I understand that the point is to actually READ 24 hours (and it felt great to do that, actually!). Plus, since we crashed Litsy (!!), maybe people don’t need to be encouraged to participate on social media MORE… 😉

    5. Will you participate in a future 24in48 readathon?

ABSOLUTELY! And I really appreciate that the date is set so far ahead of time – that allows me to plan and reserve that weekend for reading (yay!).

Thank you for all your hard work! It was a wonderful weekend!

How many books did you read? Pages?
I read 5 short books, 4 children’s books, made progress on another novel, and probably 2 hours of audiobook. 898 pages in the adult books, although my kindle isn’t set up to show pages read, so I’d guess another 100 or so there.
How many hours did you read?
Just over 24! See @Soubhiville on Litsy
What do you think worked well in this readathon?
Everything! It was a bummer Litsy crashed a couple times, but not a surprise!
What do you think could be done to improve the readathon for next time?
Nothing really, unless Litsy could get a little more power behind it 😊 Maybe an organized fundraiser attached (which could be optional. I did a personal one for TX literacy coalition!)
Will you participate in a future 24in48 readathon?
Oh yes, I’m marking my calendar now, and putting in for that weekend off!

I read for 24 hours and 15 minutes
The online participation was great. I had an absolute blast!

    5. YES! I had a blast, but I’m never going to work during the readathon again. It was really hard to make up those hours Sunday.

    Hi!

How many books did you read? Pages? (If you didn’t keep track, tell me that too!)
I finished 2 (1 hardback and 1 audio) that I was reading before the readathon started. I started another audio and a paperback.

How many hours did you read?
Audio time: 4 hours Reg. book time: 4.5 hours Total reading time: 8.5 hours

What do you think worked well in this readathon?
I think that all of the interaction and encouragement worked well.

What do you think could be done to improve the readathon for next time?
I don’t really have any suggestions. I was very impressed.

Will you participate in a future 24in48 readathon?
Absolutely. I would do a couple of things differently on my end so that I get in more time.
    1. Be well rested before the readathon. I found that I was tired and just wanted to veg part of the weekend.
    2. Clean the house before so it’s not distracting. LOL
    3. Plan more effectively. Where do I want to read and so on.

Thanks for a great weekend!! 🙂

I read 2 books completely, finished 2 others I had started before the read-a-thon and started 2 more. Total pages was 1.027

How many hours did you read? My total ended up being 21 hours and 48 minutes

What do you think worked well in this readathon? I like the time spread (24 hours out of 48 hours)

What do you think could be done to improve the readathon for next time?
Not everyone is part of Litsy or Twitter. Maybe incorporate a FB group/presence next time as well.

Will you participate in a future 24in48 readathon?

  11. I read 3 books from my TBR (528 pages) and finished 1 book was reading (~ 200 pages).

    I read for a total of 10:31:28.2

I loved that everything centered around a few social media sites with lots of interaction and interest from other users.

In the future, a little bit more clarity around what to incorporate currently reading books into the readathon.

I will definitely enter again – I had a blast!

  13. 1. Read 11 books (finished 8) but didn’t track pages
    2. Just over 24 hours (see stopwatch screen shot @sharpeipup on Litsy
    3. I liked the various contests
    4. For the next one, I would suggest some Tips/Tricks from past participants. I would have been better prepared with snacks that way & definitely would have read more the 1st day rather than cutting it so close. Also, I would recommend 1 specific hashtag rather across all platforms. More questions, quizzes, etc. leading up to the big event to build excitement.
    5. Yes, definitely!

  14. Posted my total earlier, but didn’t do the follow up questions yet!
    1. I finished two books I’d already started, one audiobook start to finish, half of a print book and half of two other audiobooks! Didn’t track pages.
    2. 24:09:17 Whooo!
    3. I liked the timing of the Litsy challenges; they kept me checking in every couple of hours but weren’t too time consuming.
    4. Maybe more pump-up posts/discussions a couple of days before, stuff like tips for newbies about snacks, pacing, audio vs print books, recommendations, etc.
    5. Definitely will be participating again!

    1) I finished the last 49 pages of one book at the start of 24in48; then, read three other books after that.
    2) 21 1/2 hrs
    3) I liked how friendly everyone was on Litsy
    4) I liked Litsy being a part of it. I would have liked more direction as to where I should go for updates. Litsy, Twitter or Instagram. Hard to read & follow updated.
    5) absolutely!

    1. I read 3.5 books (that includes 1 audio book). Didn’t keep track of pages.
    2. I proudly clocked 20 hours. So close, yet so far! But the 10+ audiobook hours really helped!
    3. I LOVE this readathon. It gave me time to do what I love to do. Plus I enjoyed meeting other participants through Litsy and Instagram. It was fun to see how everyone else was doing. Plus the contests Rocked!
    4. You can’t improve Greatness! I’d love to have more contests: maybe the day before and after. This way, it doesn’t interrupt reading time. I’d also like to see a geographical list of where everyone is from: how many in what countries and states.
    5. I wouldn’t miss the next one! I’m already planning my strategy. 🙂

  17. I know this is super late, but…. Here you go!
    1. How many books did you read? Pages? (If you didn’t keep track, tell me that too!) 9 books finished, 4 I made progress in.

    2. How many hours did you read? 19 hours and 51 minutes!

    3. What do you think worked well in this readathon? The contests were fun, but could be improved. I loved the community, the hashtags, using Litsy…

    4. What do you think could be done to improve the readathon for next time? The contests seemed to be too close together and interrupted a lot of reading time (which was hard for people like me who KNEW they wouldn’t reach the hours needed on Sunday but wanted to do the contests).

    5. Will you participate in a future 24in48 readathon? YES. Blogged about it now here: https://litluminaries.wordpress.com/2016/08/05/24in48-readathon-wrap-up/
