Hour 48: The End! + Wrap-Up, Prizes, and More!!

You guys are absolute heroes! We made it to the end, and as always, I’m humbled and proud and freakin’ exhausted. And despite the late night, we’ve got some important business AKA PRIZES to take care of first.

We had 1165 readers join in from all over the world. Considering that back in January when we did this last, there were just about 460 readers, I’m so stoked about the response this time around.

It has to be said that this explosion is due in no small part to the amazing crew at Litsy, especially Kendra and Liberty for hosting giveaways, challenges and Twitter takeovers all weekend. Litsy was on fire all weekend (in fact, you guys crashed the app a couple times because of the traffic). So many of you won amazing prizes, thanks to our sponsors, Algonquin, Graywolf Press, Coffeehouse Press, and HMH. But the prize winning isn’t over!

As soon as they’ve crunched the numbers, Litsy will be announcing five grand prizes over on the app, brought to you by Novel Tees and Out of Print. They’ll be giving out awards for:

  • “Jay Gatsby Popularity” Award (Most Followers Gained)
  • “MLR: Most Litfluential Reader” Award (Most Litfluence Gained)
  • “Charles Bingley Congeniality” Award (Ms./Mr. Congeniality award)
  • “Most Enthusiastic Readathoner” Award (Most Comments Made)
  • “Eager Reader” Award (Greatest TBR Stack Growth)

Thank you to NovelTeas – who create delicious tea flavors based on classic novels – for sponsoring these awards. Also, look how gorgeous the tins are!

novelteas large

Stay tuned for those winners to be announced here and on Litsy, early this week.

Also, thanks to Out of Print, everyone – EVERYONE – who finished a full 24 hours of reading is getting a pair of awesome bookish socks. In order to get your pair, leave a comment with a photo or a link to a photo (on social media or a blog etc.) showing proof of your full 24 hours read. If you don’t have social media on which to post a picture or are unable to comment with a picture, leave a comment letting me know and then email me at 24in48readathonofficial@gmail.com with your photo.**You must get your entries to me NO LATER than 12pm ET, tomorrow (Monday, July 25)** (Be cool, people. No cheating.)

Next, the winner of the $10 giftcard from our Intro Survey – or should I say winners! I know I said there would be just one, but we had so many entries from all over the bookternet that I couldn’t help but give out more than one. So I’m giving away THREE $10 giftcards to Amazon, B&N, Book Depository, or your book retailer of choice (or Starbucks. Because caffeine.). The winners of those prizes are:

Nephele (@NepheleTempest)

Kirsten (@snakes6atx)

Lisa (@flyfarther79)

Congrats to all of you, and I’ll be emailing you soon.

Finally, to make sure I continue to run this readathon in a way that works well for everyone, especially as it gets bigger and bigger, I’d love it if you could fill out the closing survey in the comments:

  1. How many books did you read? Pages? (If you didn’t keep track, tell me that too!)
  2. How many hours did you read?
  3. What do you think worked well in this readathon?
  4. What do you think could be done to improve the readathon for next time?
  5. Will you participate in a future 24in48 readathon?

Okay! I think that’s all the wrapping up I need to do…Oh wait, you thought I forgot! Obviously I need to announce the dates for the next readathon, don’t I?? The next 24in48 will be held on:

January 21-22, 2017

Can’t wait to see you all then! Now I’m going to go do this:

82 thoughts on “Hour 48: The End! + Wrap-Up, Prizes, and More!!

  1. How many books did you read? Pages? 5 books, 2 trade paperbacks, 1583 pages.
How many hours did you read? 24 (and a bit)
What do you think worked well in this readathon? For me- reading time with friends, social media, and #thon4ham
What do you think could be done to improve the readathon for next time? I was sad to miss out on all the giveaways on Litsy because the app isn’t on Android yet, so hopefully we’ll have the app by January!
Will you participate in a future 24in48 readathon? DUH! With better #thon4ham puns and action.

I read three books (my goal was six), but the third one took me longer than I thought.

How many hours did you read? I read for the 24 hours. I’ll be honest? Didn’t take I was going to make it that last hour.

What do you think worked well in this readathon?
For me, It was the encouraging posts from Litsy, the 24in48 and all the other readers from all over. It was exciting to interact through social media with so many people who share a passion for reading. I also loved the posts and photos. (P.S. I’ll be adding quite a few books to my TBR pile)

What do you think could be done to improve the readathon for next time?
This was my first time participating in a Readathon so I’m not sure how to answer this one. It was engaging at all times and I really enjoyed myself.

  5. How many books did you read? Pages?
I finished 6 books and read/listened to 2 others without finishing them 🙂
I did not keep track of pages, but it wouldn’t be super high, since I prefer shorter reads for readathons.
How many hours did you read?
About 13–I’m actually really happy with that since Saturday was a super busy day for me.
What do you think worked well in this readathon?
Everything! I loved this readathon. I especially liked seeing what everyone was reading on Instagram, which gave me more books for my TBR and inspired me to keep reading more.
What do you think could be done to improve the readathon for next time?
No idea! I thought it was great. Although it looks like I missed out on stuff by not being on Litsy, so maybe I’ll have to join.

  6. YAY! I’ve never done anything like this before, but I had so much fun, so thank you for hosting! You’ll definitely be seeing me again in January!!! 🙂

How many books did you read? Pages?: I finished the last half of one book, the entirety of another book, and the first 100 pages of a third one. I wasn’t exactly counting the pages, though.

How many hours did you read?: I read 24 hours! (Or, 24 hours, 4 minutes, and 37 seconds to be exact!) How’s that for perfect timing? 😛

What do you think worked well in this readathon?: I think everything worked really well! I especially liked how you were interactive with everyone on Twitter (I don’t have a Litsy, so I don’t know about on there…) and how you were so encouraging. 🙂

What do you think could be done to improve the readathon for next time?: I honestly can’t think of anything that could make it better. I do think that maybe if you had an extra pair of hands helping you run the whole thing, it might be a lot smoother and easier on you. 🙂

Will you participate in a future 24in48 readathon?: AB-SUH-LOOT-LEE!!!!! 😀

    2.I made it to 24 hours & 15 minutes.
    3. I liked being able to sleep due to the 24 in 48 format 🙂
    4. More mini-challenges & giveaways for people that aren’t on a particular app.

I read six total books and parts of three others for a total of 1,545 pages and a few hours worth of an audiobook.

How many hours did you read?
I read 24 hrs and 4 mins (to be exact lol)

What do you think worked well in this
    readathon?
I enjoyed all of it! Being on litsy regularly helped- kept me motivated and provided good short breaks to see what other people were reading. I also enjoyed the challenges, it was great seeing other peoples’ shelves, pets, favorite quotes and everything else!

What do you think could be done to improve the readathon for next time?
Maybe more challenges? They don’t all have to have prizes, I think most people participated because it was fun! But with the time differences, I invariably missed some of the challenges because they started too early for the west coast (for me at least!).

Will you participate in a future 24in48 readathon?
Definitely! Now that I’ve done one, I will be better able to prepare for the weekend of reading!

My timer pic for my 24 hours completed is on my litsy @yamich49.

I posted my time on litsy @Iceangel9 and on Twitter @Iceangel9.

I finished 4 books (two of which I had begun before the readathon) and partially completed another 3. I listened to one partial audiobook, but since I had a hard copy as well I did get the exact page count: the total was 1164 pages. I did not count the pages I had already read before the readathon; to be fair I only counted pages read during the readthon.

I read 24 hours and 10 minutes and a handful of seconds.

This is my first readathon and I thought everything went well, except for when we crashed litsy 😦

I can’t think of anything to improve it at the moment, but I’m a little slap-happy.

YES, I can’t wait for January and I’m going to try to lure my high school students into participating as well. THANK you so much for a wonderful weekend!!!

  14. Woo! Congrats to all the readers, and thanks so much to everyone organizing/hosting/sponsoring for making this such a wonderful readathon.

    1. I finished 3 novels and started a fourth (got about 1/3 through), plus a trade comic. Total pages: 1,245.
    2. I ended up reading 22.5 hours over the two days, which is a personal best. 🙂
    3. I loved having Litsy as part of the mix, especially once they ironed out their technical difficulties. Made posting photos easy, and also since I was already using the app, it was a logical place to post.
    4. I can’t really think of anything I’d improve; this is my favorite readathon.

    3) What do you think worked well in this readathon? Litsy–it was encouraging to interact with everyone and it introduced me to lots of new people–being very new to Litsy. The hosts and contests were fun. I think it worked pretty well for me to read during the set EST even though I am six hours behind. Meant that was awake during the quiet times and sleeping in the mornings for others but it worked with my body clock to start at 6:00 PM Friday here and end at 6:00 PM Sunday.

    4) What do you think could be done to improve the readathon for next time? I can’t think of anything. This was my first readathon ever and I thought it went well.

Not sure what all counts as proof but I kept track semi-old school–noting my reading times on my notes on my iPhone. Do you want me to transfer that to paper and send a picture of it to you? I put my stats on Litsy (@DebinHawaii) but didn’t break them down into hour segments there.

Thanks for the fabulous job with this readathon! I loved it!

    1) How many books did you read? Pages?

I completed 2 books and started 3 more on Saturday. And I read game of thrones all day on Sunday. For a total of 940 pages

    2) How many hours did you read?

    16 hours, 13 minutes, 34 seconds

I had a few things that I had to do on Saturday and I didn’t get much reading done that day. Only 6 hours and 22 minutes. I knew when I woke up on Sunday that I would have to work extra hard if I wanted to make 18 hours of reading happen, but I was only able to get about 4.5 hours of sleep in during the night and a nap came swift and hard. But I was determined to get in as many hours as I possibly could, even though I knew I was out for the 24 mark.

    3) What do you think worked well in this readathon?

Personally, getting my adulting out of the way on Friday and doing my best to budget my time.

    4) What do you think could be done to improve the readathon for next time?

This was my first readathon. I only found out about it on Friday morning so I didn’t have much time to plan or prepare myself for my weekend.

This was my first 24in48. I had a blast!!! Thank you so much for hosting this. My husband even ended up joining me for some reading time it was great.

I ended up reading four and a half books. I’m pretty sure it was around 1700 pages.
What worked well for me was the community on tumblr and litsy. It was fun seeing how everyone was doing, what they were reading, and knowing I wasn’t the only one getting super sleepy, especially near the end!
I ended reading just a tad over 24 hours!
You can see my results on Twitter at @theresagivan or Litsy @TheresaGivan.

Thanks again and I look forward to the readathon in January!

    2. I read the full 24 hours.
    3. I think the amount of tweets and posts were great. Not enough to intrude on reading time but enough to make it feel like a community. I didn’t do litsy, but I don’t think I’d have time for it since I always seem to squeak by on time.
    4. I think it would have been fun to have a few of the fun things on Twitter like last time instead of only on litsy. But I totally get why not.

I didn’t keep track but finsihed one premarathon read, read another 30 pages of another (almost done) and on disc 7 of an audio book (out of 9) so – I would have never done that had it not been for this! 4.5 books. I didn’t keep track of pages because I was switching between physical books, ebooks and audiobooks.

How many hours did you read?
    24 hours and 12 minutes

What do you think worked well in this readathon?
I really liked how casual it was — it wasn’t about how much you read so much as that you just read. I also liked finding other readers through Litsy.

How many hours did you read? Twenty-four, and one minute.

What do you think worked well in this readathon? I’ve been dragging my feet on Litsy since nobody I know IRL is using it, but I liked seeing the community going on there.

What do you think could be done to improve the readathon for next time? I know this isn’t your fault, but I do most of my social media on an actual computer and didn’t like having to keep checking my phone for Litsy, since it’s only available on iOS. My husband has an android and couldn’t participate there at all.

Will you participate in a future 24in48 readathon? Probably. Next time, my goal will be to make friends AND get the 24 hours done. 🙂

What do you think worked well in this readathon?Loved the giveaways
What do you think could be done to improve the readathon for next time?
I noticed that I was staying on Litsy and Instagram seeing what everyone was posting and making sure I didn’t miss a giveaway more than I was reading. This could be just an issue I experienced. Maybe have a check in schedule posted before event.
Will you participate in a future 24in48 readathon? Yes mam I have to try and beat my awful time.

I read 4 books, 1,128 pages. 24 hours, finished right before midnight (whew). It was so fun! A guilt free excuse to do virtually nothing but read for two days. I’d do it again next month (no way I’m waiting until January). I would say that while I posted my progress on social media, I didn’t have time to browse so I didn’t notice or participate in giveaways or follow the progress of others. I wish I’d been more in touch with the thousand other readers, but I just didn’t have time!
Thanks for the awesome opportunity to really challenge myself and accomplish a reading goal!

Just one book, but it was a big one and one that’s been on my tbr shelf since December! I also started part of another book and listened to HP5 on audiobook for a while.

How many hours did you read?
    About 10

What do you think worked well in this readathon?
I really like connecting to other participants on social media and seeing what everyone else is reading.

What do you think could be done to improve the readathon for next time?
I was disappointed that almost all the giveaways and fun things were happening on litsy, which isn’t available on android yet. I might’ve been more dedicated to my reading this weekend if I had been able to join what was going on there.

Will you participate in a future 24in48 readathon?
    Yes!!

  36. Thank you Rachel, and all the lovely sponsors for hosting this readathon and making it so much fun! 🙂

I only found out about it the day before, I don’t think I had enough time to prepare myself and get in the mindset, so I was a Saturday slacker. I worked well yesterday, though. My stopwatch also kept inexplicably closing so I had to record my times in my bullet journal. So I wouldn’t have been able to provide proof even if I had reached 24 hours, which I’ll have to solve for next time.

How many books did you read? Pages?
Finished 1 I was already reading, 2 started during the readathon, got halfway through another. 789 pages total.

How many hours did you read?
    15 hours, 48 minutes.

What do you think worked well in this readathon?
The sign up was easy, the hashtags easy to remember, the regular blog updates were really nice.

What do you think could be done to improve the readathon for next time?
If there will be prizes for the full 24 hours, maybe suggest some ways of recording it and say what counts as proof? I’m not an iOS user so I missed out on some of the Litsy-centred stuff. It would have been nice to do the spine poetry, even just as a challenge rather than giveaway (I live in the UK so would have been ineligible anyway).

Will you participate in a future 24in48 readathon?
Definitely! And I’ll be prepared next time 😉

A full 24in48. TBR pile a little smaller today (at least for today). Sending pic from Litsy to email. I had a blast on first readathon. Looking forward to Jan.

  38. I loved the entire experience! This was my first 24in48 and it wasn’t as easy as I thought. I managed 18 hours and 6 minutes, but I plan on training hard for the next one 😁

How many books: Four, didn’t keep track of pages.
How many hours: 18 hrs 6 min.
What worked: Loved having Litsy for company
Improvements: I will prepare snacks in advance next time…. Oh wait, you mean on your end? 😉
Will I participate next time: ABSOLUTELY!

3.5 books – did not keep track of pages
How many hours did you read?
Didn’t keep track, but probably close to 24 hours
What do you think worked well in this readathon?
I loved the Litsy interaction. I feel like I connected with so many new people.
What do you think could be done to improve the readathon for next time?
The technical issues on Litsy were annoying. More challenges would be fun.
Will you participate in a future 24in48?
    Absolutely!!

Thanks so much for organizing this!

  41. Here is my proof of completion of the 24 in 48 readathon challenge:

Now to answer the questions: How many books did you read? 6 completed, started a 7th.

Pages? (If you didn’t keep track, tell me that too!) This is approximate, as 3 of the books I read as audiobooks, but I own hard copies of two & looked up the page count on the 3rd: 1,223 pages

How many hours did you read? 24

What do you think worked well in this readathon? The Indtagram community was fun.

What do you think could be done to improve the readathon for next time? I know you guys were pushing Litsy, but more involvement in Instagram would be great.

Will you participate in a future 24in48 readathon? OF COURSE!

  42. 1. How many books did you read?
7 books (2 graphic novels, 2 memoirs, 3 novels). Also listened to 2 hours of an audiobook and read book that I didn’t finish for about an hour.

    2. Pages? (If you didn’t keep track, tell me that too!)
    2111

    3. How many hours did you read?
    24!

    4. What do you think worked well in this readathon?
The social media interaction on Twitter, Litsy, and Instagram. It was there when I needed encouraging or a distraction from reading, but it was also perfectly fine if I put my phone down and read for a few hours.

    5. What do you think could be done to improve the readathon for next time?
I feel like there was a bit more of an Instagram community in the last readathon. Litsy is great but since everyone can’t get it yet, maybe sharing the love with Instagram a bit more?

    6. Will you participate in a future 24in48 readathon?
YES! I had such a great time this weekend!

What do you think could be done to improve the readathon for next time? I was bummed I couldn't participate on Litsy, but hopefully it's ready by the next round!

  44. (1)How many books did you read? Pages?
I completed 6ish books – I read 4 print books (plus 100 pages of a 5th) and listened to two audiobooks. My page count is 1,477, plus 10 hours of audiobooks.

(2)How many hours did you read?
    24! And 6 minutes. Woo!

(3)What do you think worked well in this readathon?
The Listy involvement was super fun, and it helped that the weather here was perfect for a weekend of reading. 90s and uber sticky plus storms = so much reading time and motivation!

(4)What do you think could be done to improve the readathon for next time?
A Goodreads group would be fantastic for talking with other readers over the weekend.

(5)Will you participate in a future 24in48 readathon?
OF COURSE! It’s wonderful and fun and gives me an excuse to just spend the weekend with books. I’ll be back!

  45. How many books did you read? Pages? (If you didn’t keep track, tell me that too!) So I finished 3 paper books (628 pages), 2 and a bit audios (just under 12 hours) and made really good progress on an ebook that has been languishing on my Kobo for a really long time (got it to 68% from somewhere around 30, I think…).

How many hours did you read? The full 24. And about an extra 10 minutes on top of that.

What do you think worked well in this readathon? I really like the check-in posts – every 6 hours is good, it doesn’t make me feel like I need to always be checking in, gives me lots of time to make progress in my books.

What do you think could be done to improve the readathon for next time? This is a purely personal thing but starting Friday night would be an improvement for me. I could read late into the night on Friday, get up early on Saturday and have just a bit of reading to do Sunday. I think I’d have better balance to my weekend if I did that cause the Monday morning after is always so hard!

Will you participate in a future 24in48 readathon? Yes, I think so. I love having an excuse to do nothing but read.

I didn’t use a stopwatch but I kept track of my starting and ending times with each chunk I read of a book…
