Hour Twelve: Hit the Road

Summer is roadtrip season, and just like for readathon, audiobooks are the perfect companion. In fact several readathon-ers are participating in this weekend’s ‘thon almost entirely in the car. I love a good roadtrip and whether you’re doing it solo or with one person or a whole carload, the opportunities for some good bookish shenanigans are multitude. Which books will you listen to? Which bookstores or literary sights will you see? How many fights over which Hogwarts house is better will you have?

So for our next challenge, in the comments, tell me either: 1) which three audiobooks you’d recommend for a roadtrip and why, OR 2) if you could take a roadtrip to any three bookish locations, what would they be? And because, books are magic, your destinations don’t obviously have to make sense within the confines of space and time. Want to roadtrip with Jamie to Lallybroch (from Outlander), the city of Sky (from The Inheritance Trilogy), and Miss Qiunzella Thiskwin Penniquiqul Thistle Crumpet’s Camp for Hardcore Lady Types (from Lumberjanes)? Go for it.

We’ll be announcing winners for this challenge at Hour 18 in six hours. And now for the winners of the Hour Six Shelfie challenge:

Three books for a road trip:

    1. I saw a few mentions of the raven cycle by Maggie Stiefvater! So good. Will Patton is such a good narrator.
    2. Homegoing by Ya Gyasi – I recently listened to this, and not only is it fantastic, but each chapter is almost like a short story, though they all connect. If you’re like me and have trouble concentrating on audio, this is useful.
    3. Dare Me by Megan Abbott- such an engrossing, twisty turny story and the narrator is awesome too.

Before He Kills by Blake Pierce
Before He Sees by Blake Pierce

  3. For a road trip the three audio books that I would recommend would be the three books in the Daughter of Smoke and Bone Saga. 1. Daughter of Smoke and Bone 2. Days of Blood and Starlight 3. Dreams of Gods and Monsters. The books were awesome to read but listening to them read on audio made the experience even more amazing. The narrator does amazing voices and there are some bits where the added tone of sarcasm or wit makes the characters more relatable. These bits can be easily unappreciated while just reading.
I’m almost finished The Waking Land 😊

  5. Can’t help it – have to answer both questions!

    Recommended audiobooks
    1) The Girl Who Saved the King of Sweden – an absurd, cross-countries adventure about two people that don’t exist. If you like humorous, ridiculous, over-the-top situations, this is the audiobook for you!
    2) Ready Player One
    3) Good Omens – BBC Radio’s abridged version – another comic tale, this time about the impending apocalypse that will destroy the Earth. It’s too funny and narrated by a full cast.

    Bookish locations
    1) The library at Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry (or the one at Ilvermorny, since that one would be a little more convenient, travel wise)
    2) Martha’s Vineyard
    3) The Library of Congress

    Audiobooks for a road trip:

    1. Any of the Flavia de Luce books by Alan Bradley and narrated by Jayne Entwistle because she captures Flavia’s precocious nature perfectly.

    2. The Son by Philipp Meyer and narrated by a cast, including Kate Mulgrew, because the drama makes the miles fly by.

    3. A History of Love by Nicole Krauss and narrated by a cast, including George Guidall, because we all deserve a cleansing cry. Just make sure you pull off the road.

If I could go on a roadtrip? To anywhere? Um… First of all I’d go/drive/transport myself through time and space to the resturant at the end of the universe from the Hitchhikers guide to the galaxy series. Then the next stop would be Hogwarts from The Harry Potter series. And after that I’d travel to Narnia, because it would be cool to be able say to “I’ve been there!”

For a road trip, I recommend the Deanna Madden trilogy, starting with The Girl in 6E. You feel like you’re listening to this girl tell you her life story, & what a story it is! It’s light enough that you don’t need to read/re-read anything, thrilling enough to keep up with the pace of your car, & intriguing enough that you won’t want the books – or your trip – to end. Check these out as audiobooks!

  9. Yay audio books! I definitely recommend Simon Vs as an audio book because it’s so sweet and will distract you from the flat landscape. You (the book) is my second recommendation because it’s such a good and creepy thriller! And then finally Starlight, it’s a fun adventure.

Road trip to any three bookish locations? Let’s see…

    1. Wall with Tristran of Stardust (with all the stops along the way, of course)

    2. Hogwarts from Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets (minus the Whomping Willow attack)

    3. Neverland with Peter Pan (come on, who wouldn’t want to visit Neverland after all the books and movies about it?)

  18. If you’re going on a REALLY LONG road trip
I would recommend The Stand and 11/22/63 by Stephen King. Even though they’re epically long, they are incredibly gripping. You might miss your turns because your paying more attention to the story than the road….. but that’s a good story. Stephen King is The Master. Other than that the Oryx and Crake trilogy my Margaret Atwood is a masterpiece of distopian literature. I’m someone who is picky about narrators and I can vouch that the narrators for all of these books are amazing.

  19. I would recommend:
    1. American Gods by Neil Gaiman – because road trip!
    2. Austenland by Shannon Hale – I think it might be a good one if you were travelling with your bffs that share your love by Jane Austen.
    3. The Chronicles of Narnia by C.S. Lewis – okay, maybe not on summer time but I guess it could be great for a winter road trip.

  20. I haven’t listened to many audio books, so I was trying to think of places. But rather than visit places where books are set, I’d love to visit places that are their caretakers. Three libraries I would love to go to are the Oxford Library in England, the New York Public Library, and the Library of Congress. Bonus libraries would be the one in Kansas City with the book wall, and back to my favorite in Texas, The Rosenberg Library in Galveston. It’s a true survivor. Oh heck, I want to visit them all.

  21. Hi, I’m Brittany, and I’m going to Diagon Alley, Hogsmeade, and Hogwarts. Because, of course. See you there!

And while we make our way, the audiobooks I would recommend are:
1- the Harry Potter series because, besides the obvious reasons, Jim Dale’s narration is truly magical. He does different voices for each and every character in the series and brings a new level of intrigue to the story you just don’t find on the page or big screen.
2- the Giver quartet, because each book blends so beautifully and seamlessly with the others and they all merge into a grand crescendo of the type of hope and perspective so desperately needed in today’s world. I found listening to these gave me a larger appreciation for the message as well as the seamless plot.
3- Notorious RBG: The Life and Times of Ruth Bader Ginsburg because hearing a fangirl read the book she wrote about the life and legacy of one of the most influential and powerful women of modern times was, well, empowering on every level. Get you some Notorious RGB soon, okay?

  23. Top Three Road Trip Audiobook

    1. Bossypants by Tina Fey.

Celebrity memoirs are fun for everyone, and an easy introduction for non-readers.

    2. Dress Your Family In Corduroy and Denim by David Sedaris.

David Sedaris is always great on audio. His crazy family stories are perfect for a family road trip.

    3. Ready Player One by Ernest Cline and Narrated by Wil Wheaton.

This audiobook is a great recommendation because it is the perfect blend of 80s nostalgia, adventure, and nerdy sci-if themes.

I just got into audiobooks, so I don’t have a lot to go on, but I would choose:
    1. The Art of Asking by Amanda Palmer, because it’s funny and heartbreaking and thought provoking.
    2. Bossypants by Tina Fey, because I love memoirs as audio, and I have only read the print version of this.
    3. Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone by JK Rowling, read by Jim Dale, because I still haven’t heard it!

    2. Holes by Louis Sachar is a quick read, has a fabulous movie adaptation, and the audio book kept me coming back. I love being able to heae the woodpecker song sung out loud
    3. Pride and Prejudice. Or any classic, really. One you think would be too daunting to sit and read.

  29. I love audiobooks! I mostly listen to nonfiction on audio, because I find it much easier to follow, and a good mix of true crime and memoirs are my most popular! So here’s three that I would likely add to my listening queue on a roadtrip! They are quite diverse and would give me a variety to keep me interested!

1.) Between the World and Me by Ta-Nehisi Coates
    2.) Missoula by John Krakauer
3.) Nerd Do Well by Simon Pegg
