Summer is roadtrip season, and just like for readathon, audiobooks are the perfect companion. In fact several readathon-ers are participating in this weekend’s ‘thon almost entirely in the car. I love a good roadtrip and whether you’re doing it solo or with one person or a whole carload, the opportunities for some good bookish shenanigans are multitude. Which books will you listen to? Which bookstores or literary sights will you see? How many fights over which Hogwarts house is better will you have?
So for our next challenge, in the comments, tell me either: 1) which three audiobooks you’d recommend for a roadtrip and why, OR 2) if you could take a roadtrip to any three bookish locations, what would they be? And because, books are magic, your destinations don’t obviously have to make sense within the confines of space and time. Want to roadtrip with Jamie to Lallybroch (from Outlander), the city of Sky (from The Inheritance Trilogy), and Miss Qiunzella Thiskwin Penniquiqul Thistle Crumpet’s Camp for Hardcore Lady Types (from Lumberjanes)? Go for it.
We’ll be announcing winners for this challenge at Hour 18 in six hours. And now for the winners of the Hour Six Shelfie challenge:

What a difficult question! I’d say, Any of Bill Bryson’s travel books that he reads (he’s hilarious), Kate Morton’s Forgotten Garden (will transport you to another place and time-richly detailed and great sense of place), and maybe the Chronicles of Narnia for a family trip.

The three audiobooks I’d recommend for a road trip are Tamora Pierce’s Beka Cooper trilogy read by Susan Denaker. As an older reader they’re my favorite of Pierce’s series because Beka is an older character starting out than other heroines, and they include action, drama, and romance while being easy to follow. Susan Denaker is also an amazing reader, establishing accents and voices for the characters that make the dialogue-heavy story wonderful to listen to.

I love all of Terry Pratchett’s audiobooks but the Tiffany Aching series is my favorite. The narrator, Stephen Briggs, is amazing at doing different voices and accents for the characters.
I also highly enjoyed “A Dirty Job” by Christopher Moore for its quirkiness and the voices the narrator did for the characters.
Julia Quinn’s historical romance books are also great to listen too. The characters all have their quirks and imperfections which make them seem more human and realistic than the average romance. They also aren’t so explicit that they make me uncomfortable listening.

My three favorite audiobooks for audiobooks are actually the three I keep on my phone, just in case I decide I’m not feeling the book I’m reading!
1. Station Eleven by Emily St. John Mandel. This book goes back and forth between the pre-apocalypse and post-apocalyptic world and NEEDS to be heard, rather than read. It’s about being performed and oral traditions, it’s almost unjustifiable to read it rather than listen to the audiobook. Get lost in the Midwest and wonder if you’ll survive this apocalypse (I wouldn’t.)
2. The Martian by Andy Weir. As this is almost entirely a transcribed video journal, it makes sense to listen to it! I loved riding around clutching the car wheel while listening to this book.
3. Is Everyone Hanging Out Without Me? by Mindy Kaling. Okay, either Mindy Kaling book can go here, as can a ton of other memoirs. But Mindy’s book is so down to earth and hilarious — it makes you almost feel like you can succeed just as she has. ….while crying from laughing so hard.

Love this question… I’m a huge audiobook fan. Here are three books I would recommend for a road trip, and why:
1. The Shadow of the Wind by Carlos Ruiz Zafon, because it’s one of my very favorite books, and the audio is fantastic. A long road trip is perfect to escape in a magical, bookish Spanish adventure.
2. The Library at Mount Char by Scott Hawkins, if you’re on a kid-free trip, because it’s a nonstop, mind-blowing weird trip all on its own.
3. Song of Achilles by Madeline Miller because it’s just plain gorgeous.

My roadtrip audiobooks:
The Martian by Andy Weir – This is so perfect for any roadtrip through a desert, especially near sunrise or sunset. The descriptions of the Martian landscape, as well as the eventful nature of the book make this a great way to keep occupied on long drives.
NPCs by Drew Hayes – This one s about heroes who are just supposed to be background characters going on a quest. Great for a drive!
Rebel of the Sands – Aother adveture, and also to magical lands.

Audiobooks I would recommend:
1. Argo – While nonfiction, this was paced like a thriller and I couldn’t stop listening, even though I knew the outcome. Even better than the movie.
2. Not My Father’s Son – Heartbreaking tale of Alan Cummings life, and I really respect what he was able to overcome.
3. Born a Crime – Informative and hilarious, I loved Trevor Noah’s reading of it.

There are a ton of bookish road trips I’d like to take. 1. Maine to see the setting of so many of Stephen King’s books. 2. To England (Tudor England if we can time travel). I live nowhere near a castle or anything remotely as interesting as that, so going there is a life goal. 3. Hogwarts! Who wouldn’t want to road trip through Harry Potter’s universe?!

Three bookish roadtrip locations??! Well my answers would probably be the same with the others but here you go:

A few good books to bring on a road trip:
1. American Gods, by Neil Gaiman
This kills two birds in one stone, it contains bookish locations and would be an amazing road trip book. It itself is a road trip thorugh America and it would be truly amazing to follow the destinations along with the book.
2. Any of the Nigh Vale novels
Honestly the nigh Vale podcast is my favorite thing. The script is so eerie and weird and yet so funny. The narrator, Cecil Baldwin, is amazing. Now I don’t know much about audionbooks really but I do belive there is a full cast one for this so would 100% recommend. (Check out the podcast while you’re at it ;)) While you’re on the road, especially if it is in a foreign and unknown places, it’s easy to imagine any bypassing town to be night vale, and for all the mystical and weird things that are happening in the podcast, to be happening right in front of your nose. A good way to get lost and make the car rides fly by in no time.
3. Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland and Thorugh the Looking Glass…
Or any other fairytale. Just imagine geting lost in the fantastical world of Alice, or maybe travel with the brothers Grimm. My personal Grimm favorite is The Twelve Dancing Princesses, but yeah. A mesmerising fairy tale will make the time fly by and put the entire travel company in a light and almost childish mood, which maybe could result in some childish spontaneous fun? Essential for a road trip with friends in my opinion

These are definitely not your standard roadtrip audiobook picks, but hear me out!
1. World War Z by Max Brooks, because this is my go-to favorite audiobook whether I’m on the road or not! The star-studded full cast is excellent, and the epistolary format would make it easy to stop and start as you pull off the highway for your 700th bathroom break. Plus, if the zombies start to freak you out, you’re already in a car and prepared to outrun them!
2. City of Heavenly Fire by Cassandra Clare, because then you (having read it previously in print, of course) can cackle hysterically as your trapped husband groans when certain smoochy sexy scenes in the demon realms come up. Not that I have any experience with that.
3. Any Star Wars audiobook that has a full cast and sound effects, so you can pretend you’re flying the Millennium Falcon. Just don’t let the cops spot you going fast enough to make the Kessel Run in 12 parsecs.

For any road-trip, I know I am going to need an audiobook or five. I usually go with something narrated by Simon Vance (he has a great voice and he has read several Dickens novels which means one book can last for 20+ hours) or something by P.G. Wodehouse (always good for a laugh.)

A classic road trip book is Amy and Roger’s Epic detour, so this would be a great audiobook!
On that same note I would love to go to Stanwich, Connecticut-the fictional town that all of Morgan’s characters live in! I would love to hang out with Amy & Roger, Taylor & Henry, Emily & Frank, and Andie & Clark!
The Harry Potter series make incredible audiobooks, which is actually one of the books I’m listening to during this readathon! And who wouldn’t want to go to Hogwarts!
For my third road trip destination, I’ll have to go with the Shadowhunter institutes in London and New York!

My recommendations are:
– “A Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy” because it is narrated by the fantastic Stephen Fry
– “Neverwhere” by Neil Gaiman, particularly if you are roadtripping in Great Britain/near London
– “As You Wish” by Cary Elwes for any Princess Bride fans on your roadtrip; his book is still probably my favorite audiobook I’ve ever listened to

Both great questions with so many possibilities! Places that come to mind for excellent literary road trips are:
1. Narnia (because I had a wardrobe as a kid and actually tried this a few times and it would be so satisfying for this to actually work, all these years later, ha!)
2. Jane Austen-era England (with nearly any Austen leading man, but Mr. Knightley might be the best/most upbeat tour guide? Hard to say)
3. Hogwarts (preferably arriving by Hippogriff, naturally)

I would love to do a literarly roadtrip through England. I’ve been to a number of the sites already, but I’d want to spend more time and hit up the ones I haven’t seen, including Haworth (Brontë country), Hampshire (Austen country), and Stratford-upon-Avon (Shakespeare country), plus a detour into London for all the wonderful literary locations within the city (because how could I do England and not revisit London?).

The three books would be:
1. Anne of Green Gables by Lucy Maud Montgomery — I’m currently trying to read and re-read more classics and listening to it these days during my commute. The play with words in it and the intelligent yet creatively imaginative talk of Anne is fun to listen to.
2. Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland By Lewis Carroll — the title has ‘wonder’ in it, need I say more.
3. Animal Farm by George Orwell — Though it’s dark but an immensely witty take on power and politics of men. A great piece of satire. And, it’s short too.
