Hour Zero: Welcome to 24in48 – July 2016 Edition!

Right now, it is 12:01am ET and I am, as always, asleep when this shindig starts. Because this is – after all – the readathon for people who like to sleep. Some of you are starting now. Some of you have already been reading for hours. And some of you are sleeping just like me.

Welcome to all the readers – old and new! And a BUNCH of you are brand new to the readathon. I’m so thrilled to have you and I hope you have a fantastically bookish weekend. If you’re just now discovering the ‘thon or have been unsure of your weekend plans, you can still sign up and do so throughout the weekend.

A few reminders:

  • If you think you might really read 24 hours (and really, there’s no pressure at all to do so), make sure you track your hours. I use the stopwatch function on the clock app on my phone, and hit start and stop as I pause for other things. It might actually matter this round of readathon if you finish a full 24 hours!
  • Even though the “rules” say that the goal is to read for 24 out of 48 hours, it’s just a number to shoot for. The real goal of this weekend is to set aside some serious quality time to do nothing but read with a bunch of other people doing the exact same thing. Your time reading still counts even if you don’t hit 24 hours.’
  • Take a break, get some sleep, eat well. This is a marathon, not a sprint. And it’s supposed to be low pressure. Don’t kill yourself.
  • That being said, try to start with a rough schedule so that you don’t overextend yourself on Sunday night, if you are shooting for that 24 hour mark. Give yourself more time to read on Saturday than you think you’re going to need, because you undoubtedly won’t have as much as you think.

Follow the conversation (which honestly is my favorite part of the ‘thon) on social media. I’ll be posting from @24in48readathon on Twitter, and @24in48 on Instagram and Litsy. You can – and should – use the official hashtag #24in48 everywhere as well. I’ll be posting updates here as well, with a few guest stars, to help me out. Lastly, if you have an iOS device, make sure you download the Litsy app and follow @Litsy for fun giveaways and challenges. They’re bringing the thunder all weekend, and I’m thrilled to welcome them as a readathon partner.

Let’s start off with an intro survey so we can all get to know each other. Post in a comment below or tag the readathon on Twitter, Insta or Litsy with your answers (if you just hashtag, I won’t necessarily see it):

  1. Where in the world are you reading from this weekend?
  2. Have you done the 24in48 readathon before?
  3. Where did you hear about the readathon, if it is your first?
  4. What book are you most excited about reading this weekend?
  5. Tell us something about yourself.
  6. Remind us where to find you online this weekend.

I’ll choose one random winner who completes the survey at the end of the readathon who will receive a $10 gift card from Amazon, Barnes & Noble or any other book retailer of your choice, or Starbucks.

(Don’t forget to go check out Litsy right this instant too! They’re also running a giveaway with Graywolf Press.)

Okay. I think those are all the important details. Happy reading, ‘thoners. Have a flippin’ fantastic weekend!

  1. Alright, alright, alright let’s do this!
    1. Where in the world are you reading from this weekend? Chicago, IL

    2. Have you done the 24in48 readathon before? YES! Back in january of this year. It was my first ever readathon, actually.

    3. Where did you hear about the readathon, if it is your first? When I started paying attention to book twitter this year.

    4. What book are you most excited about reading this weekend? DARK MATTER by Blake Crouch (starting off with this actually), THE WANGS VS. THE WORLD by Jade Chang and HAG-SEED by Margaret Atwood

    5. Tell us something about yourself. Ooh okay, let’s see. Born in India, raised in the Middle East, moved out to Chicago 3 years ago for grad school. I read everything, the only genre I actively avoid unless it’s REALLY good is Self- help (I’m a psychologist, and I love academia, but can’t stand self-help books). I LOVE books, I love gushing about books I love, I lack some really crucial social skills unless it’s book talk. Yes, I will avoid people in order to read. That is a thing that happens of the reg, actually.

Remind us where to find you online this weekend. @TheShrinkette on Twitter and Instagram, and jananivaidya on Snapchat. I have a blog: theshrinkette.com, but I’ll only be doing one wrap-up of the readathon at the end of it all.

    HAPPY READING EVERYBODY!

Have you done the 24in48 readathon before? I have, but this is the first time I’m doing it without having some other something going on.

Where did you hear about the readathon, if it is your first? N/A (And my memory isn’t that good!)

What book are you most excited about reading this weekend? I’m excited to read stories by KJ Kabza and Lavie Tidhar because I know they’re both excellent writers.

Where in the world are you reading from this weekend?
I’m in the US, in Arizona, so Pacific time zone now (fun fact: AZ doesn’t do daylight saving, so we jump from mountain to pacific time zones by everyone else’s clocks, but we’re just the same time always, really. Native land does do dst, though, so there are parta of AZ out of step with the rest.)

Have you done the 24in48 readathon before?
I did the last one, my first time. I had a great time and just squeaked in my 24 hours. I’m hoping to get it done with more time to spare this go-around.

Where did you hear about the readathon, if it is your first?
When I first did it, it was through someone on Twitter.

What book are you most excited about reading this weekend?
I’m probably most excited about Richard Rider’s Stockholm Syndrome because he’s the only author I’ve read before in my stack, and I love his other stories.

    Tell us something about yourself.
I love to read, and I love that I get to talk about books online. Offline I don’t have a book community except when I stop in at bookstore events. I love to craft when I have the time, too. I love to talk and meet new people, so feel free to drop into my mentions if you want.

Via the Dewey’s 24 hour readathon earlier this year (which was my first readathon).

Finishing up The Book Thief. I started this towards the end of Dewey’s, and then really slowed down on in. I’ve got about 100 pages left to go, so should be fairly quick to finished.

    Good morning

After saying I’d skip this readathon yesterday I decided to at least try it, to get some stuff for college done and read a good book or fanfiction on the way as well. So here are my answers:

1.Where in the world are you reading from this weekend?
    Germany 🙂

    2. Have you done the 24in48 readathon before?
Nope, Never. Only Dewey’s earlier this year-

    3. Where did you hear about the readathon, if it is your first?
    On Litsy, I guess.

4.What book are you most excited about reading this weekend?
Actually fanfiction. Right now most books I read are for college, on reciprocity and altruism, and … whenever I lay hands on a book that’s not for college I feel bad. But reading fanfiction on my kindle feels different. It’s not a book, so I’m not cheating, right? 😀

    5.Tell us something about yourself.
I’m 26, sociology/political science student, working on my master’s thesis right now – it has got to do with books, yay – and a not so quick reader.

I signed up with http://letemeatbooks.zwiebelbaguette.de but I won’t post much on it, only if necessary for a challenge and maybe a ‘review’ afterwards. Well, more a ‘did I survive?’ kinda thing in german.
