Hour 48: The End!

WE DID IT! We made it the full 48 hours! I’m so thrilled for every last one of you. More than 1,300 readers participated this weekend and I hope you all had a great time.

Before we can wrap this thing up and put it (and ourselves) to bed, we’ve got a few last things to take care of. Namely, winners of the Hour 42 Literary Dinner Party challenge:

Heike (@inwhichHeikereadsharder on Litsy)

Katy Alice (@thegirlinthegarret on Instagram)

If you can, I’d love to know how this readathon went for all of you, anything you’d change, your favorite books, etc. So leave a comment with answers to this closing survey:

  1. How many books did you read? Pages? (If you didn’t keep track, tell me that too!)
  2. How many hours did you read?
  3. What do you think worked well in this readathon?
  4. What do you think could be done to improve the readathon for next time?
  5. Will you participate in a future 24in48 readathon?

And thanks to our friends at Book Riot, all readathon participants will be getting an email with a 25% discount code for their store. So keep your eyes peeled for that. Thank you to the whole BR gang for going above and beyond for this ‘thon.

Since I know you’re all dying to mark your calendars, the next 24in48 readathon will be on….

January 27-28, 2018!!

Lastly, if you finished a full 24 hours of reading, you’re eligible to win one of four amazing prize packs. Fill out this form, including your proof of hours read, before midnight ET on Tuesday, July 25th.

Thanks once again for joining me and my fellow co-hosts Kristen and Kerry. It’s been a great time.

  1. 1. 6 books (NO idea how that happened)
    2. a little over 24 hours!
    3. I love how flexible it is. You’re not limited to certain hours of reading or certain books. Just have to read!
    4. Not necessarily an improvement but I’d love to see hourly prompts, perhaps, have everyone share what they’re reading or something about it, etc.

  2. We made it! This weekend has been great!

I read 610 pages. I was about to read for 18 hours and 32 minutes!

This was my first 24in48 and I loved the Twitter updates and interactions.

I can’t really think of anything to improve just keep doing what you’re doing.

I will DEFINITELY be participating in the next one!

    See you then!

It really helped that my partner was working a ton – so I had the whole place to myself with no distractions. I also really loved taking breaks and checking all of the online chatter about the challenge.

I can’t wait for the next one!

  7. 1. How many books did you read?

I read two books in full, and read partials of two other books, one of which I DNF’d and the other of which I’m just getting started on.

    2. How many hours did you read?

I must admit, I didn’t bother tracking my hours because I knew this chaotic weekend would make it impossible for me to reach the full 24. It was interesting to note, however, that I gave myself permission to read more than usual.

    3. What do you think worked well in this readathon?

I loved the every-three-hour updates and challenges. And the prizes on offer were fantastic.

    4. What do you think could be done to improve the readathon for next time?

Oh man, I couldn’t say. You did an awesome job with this.

  8. Eek! Yay! XD As for the survey:
Q: How many books did you read? Pages? (If you didn’t keep track, tell me that too!)
A: I read 4 complete books, finished half of one, started half of another, and started just a bit of yet another! In total, I read 1,734 pages. 🙂
How many hours did you read?
24, give or take a minute or two! 😂
What do you think worked well in this readathon?
I thought the comradery (as usual) was fantastic and all of the interaction was so encouraging and fun.
What do you think could be done to improve the readathon for next time?
More international prizes (even though I’m from the US, I know people were bummed about that), and more opportunities to win prizes in general!
Will you participate in a future 24in48 readathon?
    Absolutely! XD

    The 3-hourly updates

  10. I must be a slow reader. I almost finished 2 complete books. I think I did pretty good. Didn’t keep track of pages though. I did read the full 24 hours. It was tough. I was not quite prepared as it was my first. Let me first say I did not participate in the readathon to win a prize. However, very excited to see my name picked! Kind of had the wind knocked out of my sails because there were no International prizes left. That being said, this readathon was very well run and I will be participating in the one in January! Thank you very much for putting this together!

What do you think worked well in this readathon?
The challenges and check-ins were enough to keep me engaged and on task but simple enough not to distract me too long from reading.

      1. I’d finished three books, got a good start on the fourth.

      2. I hit the 24 hour mark!

      3. The posts every three hours, they were something to look forward to so I could take a mini break from reading, and refocus and remotivate myself.

      4. I know it was hard to gauge how many international winners you’d have … but perhaps not separating prizes by US and International? Or have less winners so it’ll still be budget-friendly? I’m not sure if there’s a perfect solution, but I can sense this was definitely a challenge for you.

      5. I would love to participate again in the future! I think I’m better prepared now, I know what to expect (maybe I won’t try to tackle all the social media, just limit myself to one or two platforms, lol), and I had so much fun! Even though my initial goal was to read for 12 hours, I quickly realized I could hit the 24 if I put my mind to it, and I did! 😀

I’m not a readathon host but I am international. I think the reason the prizes are separated is that US prize givers don’t necessarily want to pay international shipping which is why there aren’t as many international prizes and the prizes are divided US/International. I won a prize after the “international prizes” were gone, and because I was able to provide a US shipping address, I was able to claim a “US prize.” Does this make sense???

Maybe we non-US readers need to work on the book places in our countries to provide prizes???

We work directly with US publishers for prize giveaways and shipping costs (along with other considerations) are why they limit prizes to US only. We’re working on solutions for the next round of readathon, but if you have any other suggestions, please let us know.

How many hours did you read?
13 hours, 19 minutes, exceeding my goal of 12 hours. I didn’t learn about the readathon until the evening before it began and already had plans for the weekend, so knew that 24 hours wasn’t reasonably attainable for me.

  41. How many books did you read? Pages? I completed three books, began four others and read about 800 pages, listening to around 6 hours of audiobook.
How many hours did you read? Just over 24!
What do you think worked well in this readathon? The challenges were all fun and easy to accomplish while completing the reading.
What do you think could be done to improve the readathon for next time? It would maybe be fun to have some kind of group live text or chat session somehow at points during the readathon, so people can chat a bit about how things are going outside of the comment boards and slight Twitter interaction.

I read for a little over 24 hours. Read 953 pages.

This is my second bookathon and felt this one was more organized and easier to follow.

Sign ups are a little chaotic but I can’t imagine handling it any other way

    Loved the interaction

I am requesting off from work as soon as I can for January!!

Thank you for running this and the prizes

I finished 3 books, almost 4… And 2/3 of my audiobook. I read for 24.5 hours.

The only improvement I would like to see is enough prizes for international readers. I was picked in hour 39, but the international prizes had all been claimed (there were tons left for the US). It was kind of a bummer. I will probably participate again.

    4. This was my first readathon of this length and I thought you did an amazing job; so well organized.

    5. Definitely! Have the dates marked down.
