If you joined us this past July, you (hopefully) remember that we talked about 24in48 with intention, and bringing the same personal attention and intention we (as three white, cis women) apply to our personal reading lives to the ‘thon. (For a refresh, check out this post.) In keeping with that goal, we wanted to highlight a grassroots organization that is near and dear to our hearts: We Need Diverse Books.

Screen Shot 2018-12-30 at 12.58.23 PM.png

In a nutshell: WNDB is a nonprofit organization birthed out of a Twitter conversation about the lack of diversity in kidlit between Ellen Oh and Malindo Lo. Things exploded from there, and what started as a hashtag campaign is now an organization that partners with authors, bookstores, and libraries, providing resources and amplifying marginalized voices, all with the aim of:

“Putting more books featuring diverse characters into the hands of all children,” to bring about “A world in which all children can see themselves in the pages of a book.”

It’s hard to distill these efforts down into a challenge for our small event, but worthwhile. For the next six hours that this challenge is open, we want to see and hear about the diverse books you love, and the ways you work to diversify your bookshelves.

If you’re looking for a definition of diversity, WNDB offers a great one:

“We recognize all diverse experiences, including (but not limited to) LGBTQIA, Native, people of color, gender diversity, people with disabilities*, and ethnic, cultural, and religious minorities.

*We subscribe to a broad definition of disability, which includes but is not limited to physical, sensory, cognitive, intellectual, or developmental disabilities, chronic conditions, and mental illnesses (this may also include addiction). Furthermore, we subscribe to a social model of disability, which presents disability as created by barriers in the social environment, due to lack of equal access, stereotyping, and other forms of marginalization.”

Since this challenge is a bit open ended, we came up with some ideas to get you started (this is not an exhaustive or fully representative list of possible entries; you can interpret this challenge however you wish):

  • Do you have a book on your shelves that expanded your understanding of a social justice issue? Show us, and tell us how/why it did so.
  • Do you have a specific title that opened you up to ideas, persons, struggles, settings, etc., in a new way (read our blurbs from the last ‘thon if you want an example)? We want to see/hear about it.
  • Share a story of encountering a book by a certain author that blew your mind wide open to the importance and impact of #ownvoices representations of life experiences.

We’ll share some of our favorite entries on social media to draw attention to the diverse, representative titles recommended by your fellow readers.

If you’re posting a photo of your entry on social media, don’t forget to use the official hashtag #24in48 so other readers can find you, and tag us so we can see! We’ll post the winners of this challenge in six hours (Hour 24), so make sure you check back after you entered to see if you won! You’ve also got until then to enter the Intro Survey!

Reminder: This 24in48, we’re trying to log every book read this weekend! Track your books as you finish them here, and follow along on Goodreads!

HOUR 15: Live Footage from #24in48 HQ

And now, for live footage from the #24in48 HQ, where your co-hosts are happily liking, sharing, and admiring all of the wonderful bookish posts and goodness happening out there in the interwebs:a black cat with white paws types frantically at a keyboard

But to be serious for a moment: we love, love, love seeing all of you reading all across the world for this amazing event. It warms our little hearts. That said, there’s only three of us, and we can’t promise to see, comment, cheer on every post out there (despite our best efforts!). So if you have a few minutes today or tomorrow, or find yourself itching for a short book break, don’t forget to peruse the #24in48 hashtag on your social media platform of choice to cheer on other readers!

Meanwhile, we’ll be over here pretending to read books but really refreshing all the ‘thon’s social channels to be sure not to miss a single update from all of you.

But before you go, let’s pull some new door prize winners, shall we?

HOUR 12: Show Us That Bookshelf(ie) [Challenge]

Ring that challenge bell, readers, because we’re one whole quarter of the way through this winter ‘thon, and it’s time for me to interrupt your reading again.

I’ve got a good reason, though. I’m up and showered and dressed in my 24in48 swag/finery, and it’s time for us to show off our bookshelfies.

For this challenge, all you gotta do is snap a picture of yourself in front of your bookshelf (or shelves, or stack of books threatening to bury you, or at your local library, or next to your nightstand TBR…you get the idea). Strike a pose, include your coffee / snacks, force your furbabies into the photo with you, however the book spirit moves you!

Here’s me and mine!

For this challenge entry, post your bookshelfie on social media/your blog and drop the link in the form. Don’t forget to identify yourself and jot down where we can find you this weekend to validate your entry.

If you’re posting a photo of your entry on social media, don’t forget to use the official hashtag #24in48 so other readers can find you, and tag us so we can see! HOUR 9: The One Where We’re All Awake

It’s Hour 9, and by the official Readathon clock, that makes it 9am for Kerry & Kristen and 6pm for Rachel. The upside to being in different time zones is that someone is always awake to man the 24in48 ship during the weekend; the downside is that we aren’t always awake at the same time, so we miss out on chances to catch up with each other. But Hour 9 is one of my favorites because it’s the one when all three of your hosts are reliably all awake, which means you get extra co-host attention (and we get a shot at actually reading a few pages of a book here and there between hosting duties!). Rose, Blanche and Dorothy from The Golden Girls huddle together with the caption, "We should celebrate."So much celebrating to be done! But first, breakfast (or dinner for Rachel). And books. And then more books. I (Kerry) spent this week trying to wrap up all my partially finished reads so I could start today with a blank slate, and I’m so excited to dive into my stack and decide what to read first. Should I pick something short and sweet? Or a chunkster to see me through the day? What’s your technique?

Oh — and don’t worry, we didn’t forget door prize winners!

If you won a door prize, head on over to the prize page to take your pick of prizes. If you didn’t win, don’t forget to keep checking back as we’re pulling door and challenge prize winners every few hours! (Which reminds me, be sure to check back through the past posts to see if you already won earlier in the day.) And you still have lots of time to enter the Intro Survey challenge from Hour Zero.

🚨 You must be officially signed up to be eligible for door prizes and challenge prizes, and you have until the end of day one to do so. You can search the participant list here to make sure you’re signed up, or if you know that you aren’t, go right to the sign-up form. 🚨

HOUR 6: What Your Book Starts With [Challenge]

Y’ALL. It’s time to yell about the fact that we’re six hours into this thing (if you’re following the official readathon timeclock it’s 6AM ET)!

The winter 24in48 always feels so cozy, and makes that first, early morning, steaming cup of coffee taste more delicious. Whether you’re just waking up continuing your streak after starting at midnight/Hour 0, we’re so thrilled to have you that we are celebrating with OUR FIRST CHALLENGE.

🚨 One quick note before I give you the deets: you must be officially signed up to be eligible for door prizes and challenge prizes, and you have until the end of day one to do so. You can search the participant list here to make sure you’re signed up, or if you know that you aren’t, go right to the sign-up form. 🚨

This year, I wanted to kick our challenges off by having you turn to the beginning of whatever book you’re reading now—or any book in your 24in48 stack. Flip through those opening pages, and read over any dedications, epigraphs (a short quotation or saying at the beginning of a book or chapter), and opening lines you find.

Pay attention to which ones stir something in you, whether it’s a short laugh, a deep breath, an extra heartbeat. That, right there, is what we want you to share with us.

Hour Zero: Welcome to the January ’19 #24in48 Readathon!

It’s here! We made it! It’s time for another 24in48 readathon. If you’re joining us by the official clock, it’s 12:01am EST and we’ve got 48 glorious, book-filled hours ahead of us. If you’re joining us for the first time, welcome! We’re so happy to have you. To those of you who are chalking up another 24in48 on your tally board, we’re thrilled you’ve returned. As of right this minute, we’ve officially broken 2,500 readers for this ‘thon, which completely demolishes our previous record of just over 1,900. You’re all amazing and we can’t wait to get going!

bear waving hello

Your hosts (that’s me, Rachel, and Kristen and Kerry) have made a few changes (lookit that pretty new logo :insert heart eyes emoji:) for this readathon, but the basics are the same. The three of us will be posting throughout the weekend, here and all over social media. We’ll be taking turns on the official social handles — TwitterInstagramFacebook, and Litsy (@24in48) — and keeping track of the official hashtag #24in48.

We’re bringing back book tracking from our last ‘thon in July where you can log all the books you’ve read during the whole readathon weekend. As you finish a book, enter it HERE and we’ll be adding those to Goodreads throughout the readathon. (Please be patient if you don’t see your books on Goodreads immediately; it’s a manual process for your hosts.) You can also check out your hosts’ TBRs and recommendations.

Additionally, don’t forget about our PayPal Donate button to help cover the costs of international prizes, which allows us to include many more of your fellow global participants in the prize giving. We’ve gotten a few donations so far this year, but the more we get, the more prizes we can offer. Click on the button in the sidebar or go to this link to be taken to our donation page. 100% of your donations (minus PayPal’s fees) will go toward helping your fellow participants who are not US-based the chance to win prizes. As more donations come in throughout the weekend, we’ll add to the prize page so as many people as possible can win. Thank you to all of you that have already contributed. In July, we were able to offer dozens of prizes to international readers that we wouldn’t have been able to give away without your generosity.

lisa kudrow in friends saying thank you

Plus! If you haven’t gotten your #24in48 merch yet, what are you waiting for? We’ve got tons of swag, including coffee mugs, t-shirts, hoodies, totes and more. Pick up your 24in48 stuff HERE or click on the baseball tee in the sidebar (it’s on sale throughout the weekend). All commissions we make go right back into to the running of the readathon, including helping us ship prizes out to you lovely readers.

Okay! Now that we’ve covered the administrative shenanigans, let’s get into some readathon-ing. Starting now at midnight EST, we’ll be posting updates every three hours until we put this ship of fun to sleep on Sunday night at midnight. It’s not too late to sign up (and you still have plenty of time to drag your friends and family in as well), which you can do here. Even if you don’t think you’ll hit 24 hours of reading, you should still absolutely sign up. Only a tiny fraction of participants do a full 24 hours but everyone that signs up and participates is entered to win door prizes and can complete challenges throughout the weekend for additional prize entries. Don’t forget: the goal is not to hit a target time, but just to spend the weekend dedicated to reading. (Click the Follow button at the bottom of the screen to be emailed every time we post a new update here.)

Speaking of prizes, challenge entries need to be sent via Google forms linked in each challenge post. Entries only added in the comments will not count toward prize eligibility. (Speaking of prizes, have you seen the prize list?)

For more tips and instructions, check out our post on how to readathon and the FAQ page.

Now, let’s kick this thing off with our intro survey. Introduce yourself by fill out the form below to be entered to win, then check out your fellow readers’ answers in the spreadsheet below. Winners will be announced at the midway point, Hour 24.

January 2019 Prize Packs are Here!

We’re quickly approaching this weekend’s #24in48 readathon and your cohosts are furiously making last minute preparations. But we wanted to take the opportunity to tell you about the prize packs you’re eligible to win if you complete a full 24 hours of reading. These packs are only possible because of the generosity of our donors and we’re so excited to be able to offer some really great options this year.

In order to be eligible for one of these prize packs, you must:

  1. Sign up officially using your name, a valid email, and a URL/username for the platforms you’ll be updating during the ‘thon. (If you need to edit your response to include an actual link or username, you can do so by following the confirmation link you received when you signed up.)
  2. Be active on those platforms during the readathon.
  3. Use some method of tracking your time. This can include your phone’s stopwatch function or a digital stopwatch (preferred) or a written time tracker, but your 24 hours must be clearly recorded. (If you need a digital stopwatch, Google “stopwatch.”) *Pro-tip: take a screenshot of your stopwatch every time you pause it, just in case you accidentally reset it instead of restarting it.*
  4. In the post that goes up at the end of the readathon, you’ll be able to submit your info and proof of 24 hours of reading. You’ll also be asked to note whether you’re US-based or international.
You’ll have until midnight ET on January 29th to submit this proof, after which the form will be closed.

Obviously, your proof is on the honor system and, while we’re thrilled to be able to offer these prize packages, please don’t abuse it.

Also, please don’t forget your internationally-based brethren and donate if you can.
